In this article, I’m going to be sharing with you some activity which is intended to practice 2 conditional. You can do it either with a partner or alone. Here’s how to apply it. Let’s suppose you’re doing it with your partner(s) or student(s).
Dreams
1)First, each of you prepares 5 slips of paper.
2)Next, write down on each slip what people (or you personally) usually want to be, do or happen in their life. For example:
become an actor, write a book, record an album. get married, move to another country, etc.
3)When you have done, place all of your slips in one single pile and shuffle them.
4)Now each of you, in turn, takes a pair of the slips from this pile and try to construct a 2 conditional sentence. For instance, you’ve got “become an actor” and “move to another country”. So you can say:
If I became an actor, I would move to another country.
And this sentence actually makes some sense. However, as you might have already guessed, some of the slips you will happen to take might turn out to elicit ridiculous, but funny sentences. And if they do, that’s a bonus.
Nightmares
5)Now each of you prepares another 5 slips of paper and this time you write down things which people don’t want to be, do or happen. For example:
get divorced, experience creative block, lose enthusiasm, become lazy, be late for the train, etc.
6)Now you take the same actions as in points 3) and 4) except that now you’re dealing with nightmares instead of dreams.
Dreams & Nightmares
7)Here you take all your slips with both dreams and nightmares, place them in one single pile and shuffle them. Afterwards, take the same actions as in point 4)
Now, that’s about it. Hope you enjoy it.
